Heat Exchanger for intercooler

Heat Exchanger for intercooler

Postby fordevangelist » Fri May 14, 2010 6:33 pm

Hi,
Any suggestions for which heat exchanger I need for an intercooler chiller that I'm going to make for my car? The plan is to run ES12A or R134 freon through one side of the exchanger. The other side will have water/anti freeze mixture (maybe 75% water) going through it. It's for a 2007 Mustang and the car is space challenged up front by the condenser already.

Looking at the 20 or 30 plate he that's about 7.5" long but not sure if that's enough. Water inlet temps will probably be about 115F or so.

Thanks!

Your biggest concern in such an application will be pressure loss/restriction on the freon side. We can do a sizing for you to keep it within a certain PSI, but in general I would recommend getting as many plates as possible and a wider heat exchanger if you can afford it price wise and space wise. The B3-12A 30 plate model should work fine. if you want bigger, go with the B3-32A models. The B3-23A models will have too much restriction. We do have some B3-32A 30 plate models with copper sweat on one side for freon if you want to go all out on the application. To get an exact sizing to what you need though, you'll need to submit the form for a heat exchanger sizing.

Also, just to give you an idea, some companies who sell chillers for turbos and such use models with 7.5 inch length and about 3-3.5 inches wide. So our B3-12 30 plate would be close to that, aside from the slight loss in width. However, most of them only use a 20 plate, so the 30 should make up for that pressure loss.
